Planted around 1771, the grapevine in our courtyard is believed to be the oldest fruit bearing vine in the Southern Hemisphere. It is still flourishing today, bearing fruit and shading guests who shelter here for their daily repast. This tenacious little vine has and still does survive un-watered, apart from the Cape’s winter rains.

But it wasn’t without a spot of bother that we tamed this brambly shrew! By 2007 the vine was growing out of control, giving more problems than pleasure as her fruits attracted bees in their droves. It was then that the esteemed winemaker Christophe Durand assessed the grapes and agreed to work his magic.

The grapes were harvested and pressed by hand and after 11 months on the clean lees, in December 2008 we tried and then hand bottled this great tasting wine. The exclusive vintage produced just 4 Magnums and twelve 750ml bottles.

The four magnums were transformed into exquisite works of art by four acclaimed South African artists. On 24th October 2009 these and the twelve numbered 750ml bottles were auctioned at a private luncheon in the Square. All proceeds from the event went to the Zip Zap Circus School.
